The Raccoons
This is a family that has been around
since the age of humans. During the age
of humans, raccoons were regarded as
pests. During the Metazoic, raccoons are
the smartest terrestrial animals of all.
The smartest of all has even taken to
tool use and regular communication.
Alepousa
A small, carnivorous raccoon that
feeds on small mammals and even
leaps into trees after birds and bats.
They are diurnal hunters about the
size of a modern fox, and often tackles
prey larger than themselves. Their
technique for hunting is much like
those of the felines of today.
Calamophagus
A small species of raccoon that feeds almost
exclusively on bamboo. This animal is about the
size of a cat and even has retractable claws. The
jaws are powerful and the teeth are very sharp
and capable of easily penetrating the tough
bamboo stalks. The tail is flexible but not fully
prehensile.
Bidenictis
This is a rather small creature, that sort of
resembles a modern coati, only they have 2
outward-growing tusks to dig into the ground
with. They mostly dig after underground prey
such as small vertebrates like lizards or small
mammals. Sometimes they dig after insects
and even if they can sniff out underground
fungi. The tongue is relatively long to grasp
the food item, but mostly they hold their food
in their hands as they eat, and balance on
their tail.
Nasuunguis
This is a large descendant of the
modern coati. The ears are larger to
hear for underground prey. The nose
has a hard "shell" over the top, made
of the same material as our fingernails.
This is used to somewhat bury the
nose into the ground to sniff out prey,
which is then dug up with their sharp
claws. The animal it's self is about the
size of a pig, and feeds on smaller
vertebrates, plants, fungi and insects.
Procyon
This is the most intelligent of all mammals
during the Metazoic. The brains are as big
as that of a human. The animal it's self is
about 6 feet long, not including the tail.
They eat anything that is available,
including smaller mammals and birds. They
will even "fish" for insects using sticks, and
sharpen sticks to use to spear fish in the
water. The raccoon species of the
Metazoic are also much more social than
the species around during the Cenozoic. It
is likely these animals will be the next rulers
of the planet.
